WESTERN CIVILIZATION IS SLEEP DEPRIVED

WESTERN CIVILIZATION IS SLEEP DEPRIVED

Michael Rosbash, a Nobel Prize winner who studies Circadian rhythms (your individual sleep cycle), states that western civilization is chronically sleep deprived. Michael Rosbash is also a revered neuroscientist who believes that the study of sleep patterns has been skipped over in recent years as a health promotion focus. Staying up late and missing sleep for a night on the town, to finish a work project, or to stay up late and binge watch a season of your favourite TV show will only result in fatigue the next day. When you do this on a regular basis, it can become a real problem and lead to prolonged sleep deprivation. Here are 7 signs that you might be sleep deprived:

1 – YOU’RE FEELING MORE IMPULSIVE

Making decisions like saying “no” to a candy bar at the convenience store, or agreeing to work the late shift can become troubling. When you’re tired, your subconscious mind wants to sleep and when a problem arises, your conscious mind is being told to make it go away. This can leave you feeling overtired and even lead to insomnia.

2 – YOUR MOTOR SKILLS ARE OFF

Do you think about all the muscles it takes to lift your leg up, or put the key in a lock and turn it? No, you just do it and it kind of happens like magic. Tripping over a step or dropping your keys can make you a klutz but do it a few times in a day, that might make you sleep deprived. Doctors say the way your body balances and the muscles it takes to make movements is done subconsciously when your brain is focused on when you’re gonna lay down on your comfy Dozy mattress rather than walk up a flight of stairs, well you might find yourself sleep deprived.

3 – YOUR EMOTIONS ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE

When you’re sleep deprived, you can be increasingly reactive to emotional stimuli. For example, watching a sad movie might bring about some tears. Even things that may make you laugh a little bit, might suddenly cause you to laugh hysterically. Overall, you will have less control over your emotions as your brain tries to adapt to your lack of sleep routine.

4 – YOU GET SICK OFTEN

Of course, sleep and your immune system are deeply interdependent. Sleep deprivation runs your body down and makes it more susceptible to infection and becoming ill.

5 – THEY DON’T CALL IT “BEAUTY SLEEP” FOR NOTHING!

Just like #4, not only will your body be run down on the inside, but it can also show on the outside. With a lack of sleep, you may be more susceptible to a breakout due to hormones such as estrogen, which balances itself during sleep.

6 – AMNESIA?

When asked to remember something or trying to remember something, you are accessing your subconscious mind. When you are tired and sleep deprived, your brain often has better things to do. Rather than trying to remember what the differential ratio for conversions versus statistics from last quarter, your brain is busy keeping up with the workload from your lack of sleep.

7 – YOU THINK YOU’VE FALLEN ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL!

Ever driven to work in the morning and had a bad case of heavy eyelids? That’s your brain telling you that it really wants to go to sleep. When deprived of sleep, even driving a car can become dangerous. If you have to pinch yourself or shake your head to keep yourself from closing your eyes, that is a big sign that you should take your sleep a bit more seriously.

There are a couple ways that you can both get a better sleep with the allotted time you have given yourself and make sleep more attractive than watching that last episode on Netflix.

You can start by going to sleep on time. A quick note to make sleep more effective (if you absolutely cannot get to sleep on time) is to stop looking at a screen before bed. The blue light from your phone tricks your brain into thinking it’s not the time for sleep yet, which keeps you from getting into deep REM sleep for even longer.

Making sleep more attractive than Netflix is a tough one. But if you live in Toronto, you could always get yourself a Dozy mattress. Just like everything that’s new, you have about 2 weeks after the purchase where you’re totally involved in the culture; getting to bed on time, waking up on time, etc. Then just like a New Year’s resolution, you forget and go back to your old habits. But hey! At least for 2 weeks, your body will not be deprived of sleep and for 10 years, you will have an awesome locally manufactured mattress.

Why Dozy?

WHY DOZY?

Why choose our mattress compared with the hundreds of other mattress companies out there? It’s simple!

First of all, Dozy is a Canadian mattress company which means our mattresses are designed and built by Canadians, for Canadians. But there are other Canadian companies as well, is what you may be saying but once again, the answer is simple. It is true that there are other companies, however, many of these companies have broken into the industry with the idea of selling their mattresses inside of a box. In most cases, mass produced, crushed into a box, and sent via Fedex. At Dozy, we realize that this is no way to treat something that most people spend over a third of their life on. But we did see that customers were looking for an easier, more digital way to shop and from that, we saw an idea. An idea to produce and ship our mattresses the way they should be; locally and with care! No stores with hundreds of fancy designs, sleazy salesmen on commission, or overpriced shipping and handling fees.

Secondly, in our research at Dozy, we found that most customers enjoy the comfort of a mattress that is medium-firm (whether it was memory foam, pocket coil, or a combination of both). That’s why we decided to develop one of each! We offer 3 variations of medium-firm mattresses so we have something for everyone.

Furthermore, to keep our priority on our customers, we offer our mattresses at different price points to help you get exactly what you want and need without breaking the bank. Our most affordable mattress is our High Park, which is perfect for guest rooms, students, and anyone on a budget. Next, we have our Yorkville, which is our gel memory foam and is a perfect “middle of the road” option. Finally, we have our Forest Hill which is our most luxury model and is perfect for your master bedroom and a great night’s sleep.

Lastly, Dozy further guarantees our customers will love their new mattress but we understand that sometimes things don’t work out. That’s why we offer all of our customers a 125 night comfort guarantee to let our customers know we care about more than their money.

All in all, we really value our customers and believe everyone deserves the benefits of a great quality mattress no matter their budget. And so, we have done everything in our power to help make buying our mattress just as comfortable as sleeping in it.

COMFORT AND SUPPORT: A BALANCING ACT

COMFORT AND SUPPORT: A BALANCING ACT

The perfect balance between comfort and support is a very personal thing but it can also be an easy thing to achieve. Many mattress companies in the digital era, claim that they have engineered a single “perfect” mattress for everyone. To us, this is simply not possible nor could it be. The fact is that everyone is different. Not only do people find different things to be comfortable, but there is also a lot of grey area between what is “recommended” and what is actually preferred by the individual. So, what is actually recommended? Today, we will look at different advice we have for each type of sleeper. We will also look at 2 guiding rules that our sleep specialists at Dozy employ when we help you find your perfect mattress.

Rule #1: Your body will roll you over around 40 times per night. This means that no one truly sleeps on just one side of their body and this is something you need to accommodate for when choosing a mattress.

Rule #2: We never recommend anything too soft. We sell medium firm mattresses as a base-line but we are a manufacturer so we have the ability to customize the mattress per our customers’ request, such as shape (length or width), density (soft or firm), etc. However, a mattress which is too soft often lacks support and should only be considered as a recommendation by a physician.

Side note: when we list the following advice, we are assuming that the majority of people like to fall asleep a certain way and only once they’ve fallen asleep do they start to toss and turn.

Side Sleepers: Side sleepers tend to sleep with the most narrow point of contact with the mattress. Considering this, a side sleeper will need more pressure relief and will probably benefit most from a pillow top, or something with a softer surface.

Tip: Try to look for a mattress with a nice layer of memory foam (gel-infused or not); your shoulder and hip will appreciate this long-term.

Back Sleepers: Back sleepers are lucky! Most likely, they can fall asleep anywhere and as such can get away with just about anything. However, you will still need a strong support for the weight of your core. Something like pocket coils will help support the weight of your shoulders and hips. Your back is curved unlike the front of your body, which is why having a good support system that will contour the lower back is important.

Tip: Think about the other types of comfortable objects you use on a daily basis; desk chairs, car seats, etc. All of these objects rely heavily on lumbar support, your mattress should too.

Stomach Sleepers: The front of your body is relatively flat, there is no arch like in your back. However, your body has irregular weight distribution throughout. For example, your hips and shoulders weigh more than your legs and abdomen. So once again, if you get a soft mattress, your hips will sink in to the mattress and cause the small of your back to kink.

Tip: If you prefer a softer mattress, you might be able to get away with it. But we still recommend choosing one with a bit of support to keep yourself from waking up with lower back pain.

3 REASONS YOU SHOULDN’T BUY A “BED IN A BOX”

3 REASONS YOU SHOULDN’T BUY A “BED IN A BOX”

LOSS OF QUALITY

During the time the mattress is compressed into the box, the cells in the foam begin to break down; the same way they would if you were to sleep on it every night. The only difference is that instead of a few hundred pounds of body weight, the compression uses a half ton weight on a hydraulic press to constrict the mattress into a tight roll. As you can imagine, all this does is break down and degrade the coils and foam at a more rapid rate.

CORPORATE CONVENIENCE

Despite the hundreds of eCommerce companies, they all have one thing in common. They are all trying to maximize their profit by cutting costs and time. In most cases, this means cutting real people and real hours. For example, instead of hiring two people to deliver your bed, they squeeze it into a box and call FedEx.

HIGHER SHIPPING COSTS

Sending your mattress in a box doesn’t necessarily keep the shipping costs down (at least not for the customer). With all the money these companies save in manpower, they dump it right back into shipping these 70-90 lbs mattresses through a box in the mail which isn’t cheap!
