This guide will go over all the standard and custom mattress sizes available in North America, who they might be best suited for, and how each size compares to international sizing options. We will also answer some of the most commonly asked questions about each mattress size.

Standard North American Mattress Sizes:

The Single or Twin mattress is the smallest standard size mattress on the market making it ideal for single sleepers and those with compact spaces.

Best For: children or single adults, toddler beds, bunk beds, and studio apartments

  • Single-size mattresses are sometimes referred to as Twin size mattresses, they are the same size measuring 39” x 75” (99cm x 190.5cm).

The Single XL is slightly longer than the standard Single by 5” (12.7cm) making it a great option for taller single sleepers and those with compact spaces. This size is also a great option for spare sleeping arrangements as it is still compact but less expensive than some of the larger sizes. 2 Single XL mattresses can also be assembled together to form a standard King.

Best For: students, tall single sleepers, spare sleeping arrangements, adjustable bases, and college/university dormitories

  • The Single XL is the same width but is slightly longer than the standard Single by 5” (12.7cm).

The Double is 16” (40.6cm) wider than a Single making it a great starter mattress for couples or single sleepers wanting the extra space. While we wouldn’t recommend this size for couples sharing their beds with children or pets, this is a great option for guest rooms or smaller spaces.

Best For: single sleepers wanting extra space, couples who don’t mind sharing, and guest rooms

Double Mattress FAQs

  • Double size mattresses are sometimes referred to as Full size mattresses, they are the same size measuring 53” x 75” (137cm x 190.5cm).

  • 2 people can fit on a Double size mattress but it may not be as comfortable as some of the larger sizes, especially for couples who like their space.

  • There are smaller sizes available including a Single and Single XL, there are also smaller custom size options such as the Small Double sometimes referred to as a ¾ Double.

  • There are larger sizes available including a Queen and King, there are also larger custom size options such as the Double XL.

  • Yes, a Queen size mattress will fit in the bed of a 150/1500 series pick-up truck such as Ford F-150 or Dodge Ram 1500 and will also fit in any larger pick-up trucks. However, a Queen size mattress is too big to fit in a minivan, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, or other pick-up trucks of similar size.

California King Mattress FAQs

  • The California King is the longest standard size mattress and is 4” (10cm) longer than a standard King, however, it is also 5” (12.7cm) more narrow.

Crib Mattress Size

The Crib is a standard size that fits specifically in baby cribs. The Federal Government regulates the size for all standard crib mattresses via the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) which dictates specific sizing guidelines including that no crib mattress should exceed 6” (15cm) in thickness.

Small Single Mattress Size

Size: 30” x 75” (76cm x 190.5cm)

Room Size: 7’ x 10’ (2.1m x 3m)

The Small Single is 9” (22cm) more narrow than a standard Single. This size is often used for cots and small antique bed frames. It is important to note that it may be challenging to find accessories that fit this custom size.

Small Double Mattress Size

Size: 48” x 72” (76cm x 190.5cm)

The Small Double is sometimes referred to as a ¾ Double because it is ¾ the width of a standard Double making it 5” (12.7cm) more narrow. It is important to note that it may be challenging to find accessories that fit this custom size.

Double XL Mattress Size

Size: 54” x 80” ( 137 x 190.5cm)

Room Size: 10’ x 10’ (3m x 3m)

International Equivalent: 10’ x 10’ (3m x 3m)

The Double XL, similar to a Single XL, is the same width as a standard Double but is 5” (12.7cm) longer. This size is good for taller single sleepers who might need the extra leg room. It is important to note that this size will likely require Queen size accessories.

Olympic Queen Mattress Size

Size: 66” x 80” (137cm x 190.5cm)

The Olympic Queen is 6” (15cm) wider than a standard Queen and is one option for couples looking for extra space without upgrading to a King. It is important to note that it may be challenging to find accessories that fit this custom size.

Super King Mattress Size

Size: 80” x 98” (203cm x 249cm)

Room Size: 15’ x 15’ (4.5m x 4.5cm)

International Equivalent: 15’ x 15’ (4.5m x 4.5cm)

The Super King is sometimes referred to as a Texas King since everything is said to be bigger in Texas. This size is 4” (10cm) wider and 18” (45cm) longer than a standard King and 8” (20cm) wider and 14” (35.5cm) longer than a California King. It is important to note that it may be challenging to find accessories that fit this custom size.

Best For: taller couples, couples looking for a lot of extra space, and extra large master bedrooms

  • Yes, any mattress can generally be bent or folded to some degree allowing it to squeeze up or down a tight stairwell or through a tight doorway or inside a vehicle. The average amount of human strength is usually not enough to cause damage to a mattress (we don’t recommend testing this).
  • A Queen size mattress will fit in the bed of a 150/1500 series pick-up truck such as a Ford F-130 or Dodge Ram 1500, it will also fit in the bed of any pick-up truck larger than that size. However, a Queen size mattress is too big to fit in a minivan, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, or other pick-up trucks of similar size.
  • A King size mattress will fit on top of the bed of a 150/1500 series pick-up truck such as a Ford F-150 or Dodge Ram 1500, it will also fit on top of the bed of any pick-up truck larger than that size but it will not fit inside the bed. A King size mattress is too big to fit in a minivan, Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, or other pick-up truck of similar size
