Many mattress brands offer some form of firmness customization, and a few do it well. At Dozy, if the standard firmness of a mattress is not working for you, we will build you a customized version at no extra cost. No upcharge, no extra wait time, no catch.
This guide explains how firmness customization works at Dozy, who it is for, and what it actually means in practice.
The short version: Custom firmness is available on all Original and Legacy line mattresses at no additional charge. It does not add any time to production. You can request it when you order, or use your 125-night comfort guarantee to swap into a custom firmness version if the standard feel turns out not to be right.

Why Firmness Matters More Than Most People Realise
Firmness is the single most personal variable in a mattress purchase. Two people with the same mattress can have completely different experiences depending on their body weight, sleep position, and what they are used to. A medium-firm mattress that feels perfectly supportive to one person can feel like sleeping on a board to another, or like sinking into something far too soft to a third.
Most mattress brands handle this with a menu of two or three preset options: soft, medium, firm. If you fall neatly into one of those categories, great. But many people do not. They need something slightly softer than a medium-firm, or firmer than a medium. The gap between what is available and what would actually work is where most mattress mismatches happen.
This is also why trying a mattress in a showroom matters more than any spec sheet. Your body tells you things a firmness number cannot. The number is a starting point, not a guarantee.
How Dozy's Custom Firmness Works
When you order a Dozy mattress, you select your size and firmness. For Original and Legacy line mattresses, you can choose a custom firmness instead of the standard build at no additional cost. The custom build does not add any time to production; your mattress is still ready in the same window as a standard order.
What does "custom firmness" actually mean in construction terms? It means adjusting the foam layers above the coil base. A softer build uses a softer comfort foam; a firmer build uses a denser comfort foam with less give at the surface. The structural components of the mattress, the pocket coil base, the edge support, and the transition foam, remain the same. Only the comfort layer changes.
How to order: Select "Custom Firmness" when choosing your mattress on the product page, then visit us in store or call (416) 840-0224 to discuss what softer or firmer means for your specific model. We will ask about your sleep position, body weight, and what you are used to sleeping on to help get the spec right.
Which Mattresses It Applies To
Custom firmness is available on the Original and Legacy lines. It is not available on the Express line.
Our best-selling hybrid, standard at medium-firm (7/10). The most common custom request is slightly softer for side sleepers who find 7 out of 10 too firm at the shoulder. A firmer build is also available for heavier stomach or back sleepers who need more resistance. Either way, the 1,100 pocket coil base and reinforced centre third remain unchanged.
Our Talalay latex hybrid, standard at medium (6/10). The latex comfort layer adds natural breathability and responsiveness. A firmer custom build is particularly useful for stomach sleepers who want the benefits of latex but find 6 out of 10 too accommodating for their sleep position.
Our premium Talalay latex hybrid, standard at medium-soft (5/10). At the softer end of the range, the most common custom request here is firmer — for back or stomach sleepers who want the luxury and longevity of GOLS-certified latex but need more support than 5 out of 10 provides.
Our all-foam mattress, standard at medium-firm (7/10). Custom options include softer and firmer builds, with soft and extra soft available for side sleepers or lighter sleepers who want more cushioning than the standard build provides. No coil base, so the full feel adjustment comes from the foam layers.
Express line note: The Osgoode is on our Express line and is not available with custom firmness. It is designed as an accessible, straightforward entry-level mattress at a fixed spec. If custom firmness is important to you, the Summerhill or Davisville is the right starting point.
How to Figure Out What Firmness You Actually Need
The best way is to come in. Lying on a mattress in your actual sleep position for five minutes tells you more than any firmness scale or online description. Our showroom is at 290 Queen St W.
If you want to think through it before you visit, a few useful starting points:
Sleep position
Side sleepers generally do better on softer surfaces — the shoulder and hip need to sink slightly to keep the spine aligned. Back sleepers typically need medium-firm support under the lumbar region. Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to keep the hips level. If you move between positions, the middle of that range is usually the right starting point.
Body weight
A heavier sleeper presses further into the same mattress than a lighter one. What feels medium-firm to a lighter person may feel quite soft to someone heavier. If you are on the heavier side, consider going firmer than your sleep position alone would suggest. If you are lighter, you may find the standard feel more accommodating than average.
What you are used to
If you have been sleeping on a very soft mattress for years, a medium-firm mattress will feel hard for a few weeks even if it is the right choice for your spine. If you have been on a firm surface, a medium mattress may feel like you are sinking. Factor in your baseline when assessing what you try in the showroom.
What Happens If You Get It Wrong
This is where the 125-night comfort guarantee matters. All Original and Legacy line mattresses come with a 125-night trial period. After a 60-night break-in period — during which the foam softens to its baseline feel — if the mattress is still not right, you can swap it for a custom firmness version of the same model at no charge. You can make up to two exchanges within the 125-night window.
The break-in period is worth taking seriously. A new mattress is at its firmest when it first arrives. The foam needs time under body weight to relax to its true feel, and most people notice a meaningful difference between week one and week eight. The 60-night period before exchanges are available is there specifically to let that settling happen before drawing conclusions.
New mattress feel too firm? Give it 60 nights. Still not right after that? Call us at (416) 840-0224 and we will sort out a custom firmness exchange. No additional fees, no hassle.
