Two weaves of cotton
Sateen or percale?
Both are cotton. The weave changes how they feel.
Sateen
One thread under, three or four over. More cotton on the surface gives the sheen and the silky feel.
Percale
One over, one under: a plain weave. Cool, crisp and matte.

Fibre length
Why long-staple cotton makes a better sheet
Staple is the length of each cotton fibre. Longer fibres make a softer, stronger sheet.
Long fibres spin into a finer, smoother thread with fewer loose ends. The sheet feels softer and pills less.
Cotton staple length classes
- Short
- 0.25 to 0.94"
- Medium
- 0.94 to 1.13"
- Long Ours
- 1.13 to 1.38"
- Extra-long
- over 1.38"
Staple length classes used by the USDA.
Ours: long-staple Egyptian cotton
Combing removes the shortest fibres before spinning, for a smoother, stronger thread.
Thread count
Thread count, explained
The biggest number on the package, and the most misunderstood.
What thread count measures
Threads per square inch, lengthwise plus crosswise. It measures how tightly a fabric is woven, not how good the cotton is.
How the number gets inflated
Some brands twist two to four fine strands into one thread, then count every strand. 250 four-ply threads become "1,000 thread count". The US Federal Trade Commission counts a plied thread as one.
Same number, different sheet: two 900 thread count sets
About $60
The cheap 900
- Thick plied threads, counted strand by strand
- Short-staple cotton with loose fibre ends
- Softness from finishes that wash out
- Heavier, warmer, pills sooner
About $900
The expensive 900
- Fine threads of long-staple cotton
- Smooth and strong from the fibre, not a finish
- Lasts much longer
Same number on the package. A very different sheet.
Why bigger isn't better
Consumer Reports found the sweet spot is about 400. Its top-scoring percale was just 280. Past that, extra threads usually mean a heavier, warmer sheet, not a better one.
Our 300 thread count sateen
Long-staple, combed Egyptian cotton: soft from the fibre, not an inflated number, and breathable. A 900 thread count sateen of short-staple cotton costs less to make and sleeps warmer.

Questions, answered
What people ask most about our cotton sateen bedding.
What thread count is best for cotton sheets?
Roughly 200 to 400, counted honestly. Consumer Reports found the sweet spot is about 400. The fibre matters more than the number: long-staple cotton makes a softer, stronger sheet at a modest count. Ours is 300 thread count, long-staple Egyptian cotton.
Is 1,000 thread count better?
Usually not. Counts that high come from twisting several fine strands into one thread and counting every strand. The US Federal Trade Commission counts that as one thread. The sheet is heavier and warmer, not better.
Is sateen hot to sleep on?
Not ours. Sateen that sleeps hot is usually a dense 900 thread count of thick, short-staple cotton, and it's the cheaper sheet to make. Ours is 300 thread count, long-staple Egyptian cotton, and breathable.
Which wrinkles less, sateen or percale?
Sateen. Percale creases more, and many people iron it. Linen creases too, but never needs ironing.
What is long-staple cotton?
Staple is the length of each cotton fibre. The USDA classes long staple as 1.13 to 1.38 inches. Longer fibres make a smoother, stronger thread that feels softer and pills less.
Is Egyptian cotton better?
Egypt grows some of the longest cotton fibres in the world. The name alone isn't a guarantee: check the staple length too. Ours is long-staple, combed Egyptian cotton.
What comes in a cotton sheet set?
A flat sheet, a fitted sheet and two pillowcases (one with Twin/Single). Or buy a fitted sheet, duvet cover or pillowcase set on its own.
Will the fitted sheet fit my mattress?
Our fitted sheets have 17" deep pockets. They fit most mattresses, including thick and pillow-top beds.
What kind of closure does the duvet cover have?
A zipper, with corner ties inside to hold your duvet in place.
What sizes and colours does it come in?
Twin/Single, Double/Full, Queen and King, in White, Oat, Sky, Charcoal and Fog.
How do I wash cotton sheets?
Machine wash cold with mild detergent and like colours. No fabric softener or bleach. Tumble dry low. Iron on the cotton setting if you like it crisp.
Do you sell percale too?
Yes. The Percale Cotton Bedding is 200 thread count cotton percale in white: cool, crisp and matte. Switch with the weave buttons at the top of this page.
Does thread count matter for linen?
No. Linen is measured by weight, in grams per square metre (GSM). Ours is 165 GSM.
How fast is shipping?
Free across Canada, in 2 to 5 days. Some bedding is in stock at 290 Queen St W for pick-up, first come, first served. Call (416) 840 0224 to check before you visit.
Do you put bedding on sale?
